New 2008 Citizenship Requirements in Australia

You have resided in Australia as a permanent resident for at least 12 months in the last 24 months.

  • If you were born before 20th August 1986 but none of your parents hold citizenship or permanent resident rights.

OVERSEAS BIRTH TO AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN PARENT If you were born overseas and one of your parents is holding an Australian citizenship at the time of your birth, you are qualified for registering yourself as an Australian citizen.
You can register at an Australian embassy overseas.
DUAL CITIZENSHIP Australia permits its citizens to have dual citizenship.

You continue to be an Australian citizen even if you may have lived overseas for several years.
