How to Extend a Visitor's Visa for a U.S. Citizen Visiting Canada
- 1). Visit the "Application to change conditions or extend your stay in Canada as a visitor" page on the CIC website (see Resources) and download the application package. The application package is comprised of Forms IMM 5551: Instruction Guide; IMM 1249: Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay, or Remain in Canada; IMM 5409: Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union; IMM 5476: Use of a Representative and IMM 5558: Document Checklist.
- 2). Complete the application forms, making sure to provide as much detail as possible.
- 3). Gather supporting documents to support your application for a visitor's visa extension. Supporting documents include but are not limited to proof of your identity, bank statements showing sufficient financial resources, proof of your current status in Canada and details demonstrating your intent to leave Canada upon the expiration of your visa, including specific return dates and the method of transportation you plan to use to leave Canada.
- 4). Pay the processing fee of your visitor's visa extension online by visiting the "Payment of fees through the Internet" page on the CIC website (see Resources), clicking "Continue" and then following the prompts to finalize the payment process. As of early 2010, this fee was CAD $75. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. Upon completing the payment, print the proof of payment.
