How to Protect Outside Lighting

    • 1). Position your lighting high enough off the ground that it cannot be easily reached without a ladder. This makes it more difficult for thieves or vandals to disable the lighting quickly.

    • 2). Ensure your outside lights are adequately protected from extreme weather conditions such as pouring ran or snow. Awnings and overhangs offer effective coverage to the exterior lights below them against these types of weather hazards.

    • 3). Check your lights weekly to look for any signs of damage. If a bulb is burned out or cracked, it should be replaced immediately.

    • 4). Clean off your lights monthly with a damp rag to make sure there is no dirt buildup. Check them specifically after a rain or ice storm to dry them off and break away any ice that has frozen on them. This helps prevent overheating or electrical shorts.

    • 5). Set your exterior lights to timers to ensure they come on once it gets dark. This is not necessary if they operate on a light-sensor, but it is useful in keeping your home well-lit while you are not home, which helps prevent anyone from damaging the lights.
