How to Finish Woodcraft Unpainted Furniture

    Painting Instructions

    • 1). Lightly sand the furniture using 100- to 120-grit sandpaper, concentrating mainly on rough spots, then remove the dust by wiping the entire piece with a tack cloth.

    • 2). Using a foam brush, coat the furniture with primer to prevent knots in the wood from bleeding through the paint. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 3). Apply the first coat of paint, using a foam brush, then allow to dry completely.

    • 4). Crumple up a brown paper bag. Buff the surface of the furniture lightly with the bag, then wipe the dust off with the tack cloth.

    • 5). Repaint once or twice until the desired look is achieved. Allow time to dry between coats.

    • 6). Apply at least three coats of top coat with a foam brush. Allow each coat to dry fully and buff with a crumpled brown bag between coats. Do not buff before applying the final coat.

    Staining Instructions

    • 1). Lightly sand the furniture using 100- to 120-grit sandpaper, concentrating mainly on rough spots, then remove the dust by wiping the entire piece with the tack cloth.

    • 2). Stir the stain thoroughly. Avoid shaking the can; this will cause bubbles.

    • 3). Apply the stain with a foam brush, going in the direction of the grain. Work in small, manageable sections of the furniture.

    • 4). Wipe off the stain with a clean cloth, moving in the direction of the grain. Continue staining and wiping until the entire piece is covered. Let dry overnight.

    • 5). Buff the furniture with a crumpled brown paper bag, then wipe off any dust with a clean tack cloth. Complete the furniture by applying a top coat, following the directions in Step 6 above.
