Michelangelo"s First Steps
Between 1501 and 1504 was created the most beautiful work ever executed - a fascinating sculpture made by immortal Michelangelo. It was his statue of David. He was very young than, at about 27, and just finished his well-known Madonna Della Pieta. For his David he was commissioned by the Cathedral's Operai. The statue was made of a huge unflawed marble chunk. Before Michelangelo David was portrayed by Verrocchio and Donatello. They depicted him as a young boy. But Michelangelo's giant sculpture was showing a totally different David, who reached his manhood, waiting to encounter Goliath. David was preparing to kill his enemy using no weapon but his intellect and skill. At that time Florence experienced some rough period. And Michelangelo made his David as an ideal, as a symbol of his own patriotic feelings and views. The man shows the weakness of brutal strength and weapons in comparison with human's spirit and intellect. He believes the enemies may be easily conquered by the intellectual strength.
Michelangelo was born on the 6th of March in 1475. His place of birth was a small town outside of Florence, in Caprese. But as well as his father, the mayor, Michelangelo always thought he was Florence' s son - "the citizen of Florence". Michelangelo's father wanted him to be some kind of businessman. But young Michelangelo wanted to bind his life with Art. So when he was a thirteen-year-old boy, he apprenticed in the workshop of a prominent Florentine artist - Domenico Ghirlandaio. But young Michelangelo stayed unsatisfied, painters didn't want to teach him their own artistic secrets. So later he was hired by the ruler of Florence - the Magnificent Lorenzo de Medici and was patronated by him. It's at the Medici's Garden of San Marco, where Michelangelo studied human anatomy. At the age of 16 Michelangelo produces two relief pieces. Even then he already had his unique style. Michelangelo was always unique.
