Pharmacotherapeutic Management of Arrhythmias
Clinical studies are among the most important literature published in the area of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and are the basis of many of the standards of practice today. We compiled a list of these clinical trials, as well as well-written, up-to-date review articles and important treatment guidelines, that focus on pharmacotherapeutic management of arrhythmias. This list should be useful not only to practitioners and trainees in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, but also to other clinicians as an update.
In 2002, several clinical pharmacy practitioners compiled a list of key articles and guidelines related to critical care pharmacotherapy (Erstad BL, Jordan CJ, Thomas MC. Key articles and guidelines relative to intensive care unit pharmacology. Pharmacotherapy 2002;22: 1594-610). This information was extremely well received by clinicians and trainees who practice in that area, as well as by clinicians as a quick update. Thus, the Cardiology Practice and Research Network of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy undertook the initiative to compile similar lists of key articles in different therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. Owing to the enormous amount of significant literature in the area of cardiology, the list of key articles in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy was subdivided into different areas of cardiology, namely, hypertension, hyper-lipidemia, acute coronary syndromes (published in the January 2004 issue of Pharmacotherapy), heart failure, and arrhythmias.
This list in the series includes some the most important literature in the area of pharmacotherapeutic management of arrhythmias. After performing a complete literature search, the authors consented that the references discussed are among the most important ones published and are the basis of some of our standards of practice today.
