How to Make Out & Endorse a Check

    • 1). Jot down the date in the upper-right corner of the check. Most checks have a specific line for the date.

    • 2). Write out the numerical value of the check -- how much money you are paying with the check -- in the small box on the right side of the check. Make sure you include the decimal point, even for round numbers. If, for example, you want to write a check for $200, you will write it as "200.00."

    • 3). Write out the alphabetical value of the check on the line immediately to the left of the box mentioned in the previous step. The check for "200.00", then, would be written out as "Two Hundred and 0/100." Draw a line from the end of the number to the end of the line to ensure nothing more can be added.

    • 4). Sign the check in the bottom-right corner.

    • 5). Flip the check over and look for a small box and a signature line on the back. The box may read "Endorse Here" or "Endorsement."

    • 6). Sign your name along the signature line or in the box to properly endorse the check.
