Public safety agencies, such as first responders, are continually looking for new and better ways to perform tasks and keep personnel safe. Communication is a key factor for many public safety organizations. Cisco is working to provide new ways to modernize the day-to-day functions of public safety personnel to improve communications, which will result in a higher level of safety for first responders and other public service employees. There are three main areas where Cisco is focusing its communication safety efforts: emergency communication, military applications and child Internet safety. - In the event of an emergency, communication becomes vital to keeping all affected as safe as possible. First responders need to be able to speak to each other without being overheard on the open airwaves. Cisco and IBM Command are working in a joint effort to provide homeland security and public safety agencies with the equipment that will allow first responders to connect with each other to relay information.
- The need for military forces to connect and receive accurate information is vital to the safety of our armed forces. Cisco has addressed this concern by assisting the military in the development of the Shots Potter Gunshot Location System. This system provides the military with a wide coverage observation. As a shot is fired or an explosion occurs, the system records the location of the explosion and relates the information back to the military command center. This allows officers to provide a higher level of safety to soldiers by moving the ground troops or public security personnel as needed to avoid the gun fire.
- Cisco is taking an active approach to educate teens and young people about the dangers lurking on the Internet. Cisco has created a kids and teens cyber safety program that kids and parents can implement. It teaches young people how to make good passwords, why they shouldn't talk to everybody online and what to do if something has happened online that shouldn't have. The program also teaches kids how to assess if a site is a good or bad site and whether or not they should continue to navigate to it.
Cyber bullying is a problem that has developed out of the technology age. Cisco's Internet safety program addresses this problem and tells kids what steps they should take to end cyberbullying.
