Levitt Shell Fall Concert Series
The Levitt Shell free concerts resume in September with a lineup that will help Memphis celebrate the fall season. The 2015 Orion Free Music Concert Series returns Friday, Sept. 4, and will include local and regional favorites along with a special night featuring Three Dog Night.
The ninth annual Rock for Love, benefiting the Church Health Center, will finish its weekend with a free North Mississippi Allstars show at Levitt Shell on Sept.
6. The band will celebrate the release of the new album, World Boogie Is Coming, which comes out Sept. 3. The album was produced by the Dickinson brothers at their Zebra Ranch Studios in Hernando, Miss., aside from a day at Memphis’ Royal Studios with Robert Plant. The album features a number of music icons and friends of the band.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, Memphis Renaissance & Harlem will be an evening celebrating many art forms. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. there will be an assortment of community arts, including mural painting, the Carpenter Arts Garden’s Levitt Shell-shaped yard sign painting and Spillit Memphis with its fun way of creating a digital community board.
There also will be plenty of swing dancing, face painting, balloon animals, sidewalk chalk and more before the performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s brass section, Harlem, will lead the audience in swing music that is period pieces of the Harlem Renaissance. The finale will feature the nationally acclaimed ballet “Harlem,” set to the score of Duke Ellington’s music and incorporating Memphis Jookin’ with the New Ballet Ensemble.
The Stars at The Shell Benefit Concert will feature Three Dog Night Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. This benefit concert is the single ticketed event of the series and is an opportunity to help support the Levitt Shell. General admission tickets begin at $25.
The fall series will end on Sunday, Oct. 11, with the “This is Memphis” Music Festival featuring Ben Callicott, Mary Owens, Drew Erwin and the Bluff City Soul Collective celebrating the traditional sound of the city.
