What Is Court Supervision Following a Speeding Ticket?

    Definition

    • Court supervision is a probationary period after receiving a traffic ticket. It allows you to keep tickets from being entered on your public record.

    How to Get It

    • Request court supervision when you appear in court. You may also receive it after the completion of a traffic safety class.

    How It Works

    • If you don't receive another ticket during the supervisory period, usually 90 or 120 days, the negative information is not placed on your public record.

    Why to Request It

    • If tickets appear on your public record, they can cause your auto insurance premiums to increase. They can also affect your ability to get jobs, especially those in which driving is involved.

    Warnings

    • You may not receive supervision if you've received a ticket in the year prior to your court date. If you receive a ticket during court supervision, it will no longer be in effect and both tickets will appear on your record.
