Design Ideas for Book Storage

    Ladders and Staircase

    • Instead of lining an entire wall with shelves, use a ladder to store books. Open a ladder to neatly organize books on every step of the ladder. A sawhorse ladder and even a step stool can serve to store books too. If you have a wide staircase, you can stack your books on the wall along the steps. Additionally, if you have space under your stairs, you can install shelves in this recessed area for your beloved books.

    Entryway Wall

    • Most entryways, such as those that lead from dining rooms to living rooms, have wall space on both sides as well as above the open space. A creative solution to making the most of the wall surrounding the entryway is to build shelves along that sides and top of the wall. This saves valuable floor space in a home that doesn't have enough space for a free-standing book case.

    Wall Pegs

    • Wall pegs are not only useful for hanging clothing, hats and accessories but to hold books as well. A row of pegs installed along a wall a few inches apart can hold stacks of books. Your books can be squeezed between the pegs for a tight fit. For the pegs to hold books, they must be close enough to hold a book tightly. The only downside to this storage system is that books come in different sizes and not all books can fit between the pegs. A solution would be to install pegs varying widths apart.

    Store Shelves

    • If you have plenty of room in your home, retail shelves are a simple way of storing books. Free-standing shelving units made for industry, retail spaces, work spaces and the garage are usually made of galvanized steel. These racks are sturdy and strong, and some have a loading capacity of half a ton, making them ideal for storing many books. As well as being strong, the shelves are fully adjustable and you may find some that are up to 96 inches tall.
