How to Title a Homemade Boat Trailer in Indiana
- 1). Download and fill out the Application for Certificate of Title (State Form 205) from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles website.
- 2). Have a Vehicle Identification Number inspection performed on your boat trailer. This can be done for free at any Indiana license branch, or you can pay a law enforcement officer to perform it for a fee of up to $5. The officer will need to fully complete the Affidavit of Police Officer/Physical Inspection of an Indiana Resident's Vehicle/Watercraft form (State Form 39530) when he finishes performing the VIN inspection.
- 3). Have your trailer weighed by a facility with a certified scale. The facility will provide you with a document showing the trailer's gross weight. This will be used to determine registration fees and the type of registration.
- 4). Take all of the above mentioned paperwork, plus two forms of picture identification and money to pay registration fees, to your local BMV office. If your boat trailer has all of its paperwork, then it will be titled and you will be able to register it in the state of Indiana. You will be issued a license plate, VIN plate and registration sticker for the trailer.
- 5). Affix the VIN plate, license plate and registration sticker securely to the trailer.
