Digestive Disease

    Celiac

    • Some individuals can't eat protein found in rye, barley or wheat. Thus, they must eat gluten-free foods. If gluten is consumed, symptoms include stomach pain, gas, diarrhea and weight loss.

    Dumping

    • Rapid gastric emptying or dumping syndrome happens when undigested food empties into the small intestines approximately one to three hours after a meal. Symptoms include dizziness, hypoglycemia and weakness.

    GERD

    • With gastroesophageal reflux disease, fluid or food mixed with stomach acids returns to the mouth. GERD is similar to belching, but the digested food can be tasted.

    Gastroparesis

    • Also called delayed gastric emptying is when the stomach takes longer than usual to move food to the small intestine for digestion. The symptoms are heartburn, lack of appetite and abdominal bloating.

    Intolerance

    • With lactose intolerance, individuals can't drink milk or eat foods made with milk. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, bloating and gas.
