"With Jewel"s Hat" by John Quinlan

From the Artist: First I picked ultramarine blue, cadmium orange, and titanium white to use and put the rest of my paints away. Then I printed out one of your Color Mixing Worksheets. Seeing all the great colors I decided on this portrait. When I first did it I thought the face was too light. Next time it was too dark and orange. The third time came out pretty good so here it is. This is a great project and gave me a good appreciation of the color mixing worksheets.

I can see a good advantage in using them before starting a painting.

From the Painting Guide: Third time lucky, eh? Seriously, persistence is far more useful than luck in painting, and I think you should be pleased with this painting. To me it's a portrait that conveys a great sense of joy, of something going on that's giving pleasure. (And I like to think it's the joy of painting, the sense of discovery with mixing the colors, and the pleasure in the result.)
