Snowy Day Kindergarten Activities

    Snow Structures

    • Snow is like frosty silly putty for children, which makes creating physical snow structures loads of fun. From snow forts to the Loch Ness Monster, the possibilities are endless. Divide the students into small groups and assign them a fun snow creature or object to make, to teach your kindergarteners the importance of teamwork. Emphasize that their creation could not have gotten so big if every member of the group did not pitch in. Students can receive bonus points for telling a lively story about their work of art. Next, send your little ones on an arctic exploration around these structures.

    Paper Snowflakes

    • Cutting paper snowflakes into an array of shapes fascinates many children. Each snowflake is distinct from all others, making each child feel special and cherished. Lay out crayons, coloring pencils and other arts materials on the table so the kids can personalize their own snowflake. Instead of pasting them onto a classroom wall, hang them on a makeshift clothesline and watch them twirl in the air.

    Stories and Poems About Snow

    • After snacks, tell your kindergarteners to gather around you for story time. Find a book with lots of colorful pictures and vibrant characters. Ask them what noises certain snow-frolicking animals make. Recite a poem about the white blanket outside, and then have them say certain words along with you. Young kids love rhyming and saying sound words like "splish splash" and "brrrrr."

    Winter Coloring Pages

    • Find or create your own coloring pages for the kids. Draw a friendly snowman saying hello to everyone, a furry animal hiding in its burrow, a girl with funky mittens or an ice skating scene. Scan these and have your kids color them in. Make sure you have plenty of white crayons available.

    Snowman Ornament

    • If Christmas is around the corner, have the kids create ornaments for their trees. Trace the outline of a snowman on cardboard stock and let the children fill in the details. Their snowmen could have mustaches, top hats and may even be snow girls. Punch a hole at the top, loop a paperclip through, and you have yourself an ornament for the Christmas tree.
