How to Make Massage Stones

    • 1). Visit a local quarry, river or stone store to select the proper stones. A stone store is the best option to find stones used specifically for massages. Basalt is the most commonly used stone, while marble and jade are other options. Choose smooth stones that not scratch the skin.

    • 2). Select rocks that are different shapes but flat on the top and bottom. Vary the size of the stones; stones the size of your palm are perfect for larger areas, like your back; smaller stones can fit in tighter spaces, such as between your toes. Pick up wedge-shaped stones to use under and around your shoulder blades; a medium, square stone fits perfectly on your neck.

    • 3). Wash the stones thoroughly if you are using natural stones instead of purchased ones. Do not use soap or any other products; place them in warm water and use a towel or wire brush to scrub off any dirt and debris until they feel smooth to the touch.

    • 4). Heat the stones to 120 degrees F. You can purchase a stone warmer, or warm them in a large pan on your stove while checking the water periodically with a thermometer. Use tongs to remove the stones from the hot water, then set them aside on a towel.

    • 5). Dry the stones thoroughly with the towel, then hold them in your hand to ensure they are not too warm before applying them to the body.
