Preventing Clothes Moths
Without proper moth protection or use of effective moth repellents, clothes moth infestations can take hold within 3 weeks you can find yourself with 100 larvae eating your clothes.
So stopping the infestation with effective moth protection before it really gets started is the best way of dealing with it.
Most of these infestations will take place within carpeting, woolen items, upholstered furniture as well as other furnishings.
So one of the first things to consider is that if you ever by a second-hand or used household item, it should be sunned thoroughly before being brought inside as any small amount of larvae can lead to a household infestation.
Clothes moths are attracted to moisture and will often target clothing that is stained by foods, sweat, urine or other substances so another form of protection is to keep a low humidity and keep your clothing dry.
They have no interest in the food itself but as the larvae do not drink, they need to find food that contains moisture so if you keep your clothing clean and dry whilst in storage, you will find that any moths or larvae that are present will search for a more moisture-rich food source.
A naturally occurring moth repellent is light, particularly when they are in their larval stage, to the point that they will drop off clothing if they can't find sufficient cover from bright light.
So one very effective form of moth protection and way of ridding clothes of any clothes moths or larvae, is to simply expose them to intense light whether outside or through artificial lighting.
This will have a similar effect to a lot of moth repellents and they will just drop off in search of darker locations.
Clothes moths can be controlled by a variety of methods, including periodic dry cleaning or laundering, proper storage, freezing, heating, or fumigating, trapping, or using an insecticide (there are various forms of moth repellent that will kill the insects).
All of these are good forms of moth protection.
One way of creating an atmosphere that moths would act as a moth repellent would be to keep a house or particular room to a level of low humidity.
Building construction that is free of many tiny cracks and crevices is also an often overlooked form of moth protection, as this is a popular place for moths to inhabit and to lay their eggs.
As well as requiring a building with limited cracks and crevices, you can also limit the other places moths can lay eggs or reside during their adulthood.
Those that are prone to infestations may choose not to have rugs in a room or to take it even further, may opt to have hard wood flooring as opposed to carpets.
Similarly, choosing leather sofas and furniture will reduce the potential food sources for the moths.
