UK Visa Requirements for Malaysians

    Visitors

    • Malaysians can enter the U.K. as a visitor for the purpose of tourism for up to six months without a visa. When you arrive at a U.K. entry point, you must present a valid Malaysian passport. Be prepared to prove to a border official that you can pay for your trip (credit card and bank statements help) and that you will leave at the end of six months (a round-trip ticket and proof of property, work or studies in Malaysia helps).

    Students

    • Malaysians going to the U.K. to study for more than six months do need to obtain a student visa. You do not need to obtain a student visa if you are going for a short period of study (less than six months) or to visit schools, though you can apply for a student visitor visa or a prospective student visa in these situations if you prefer to travel with one. If you are studying for more than six months, you must apply for a general student visa through the Border Agency website or a U.K. consulate or embassy. In addition to filling out the application form and paying a visa fee, you will need to submit supporting documents, which include: a passport, a passport-sized photograph, previous passports, evidence of financial situation, proof of current job or course of study, monthly income after taxes, local police report, acceptance to an authorized educational institution in the U.K., evidence of any previous study in the UK, any language certificates, education history, course of study expenses and expected living costs while in the U.K. All of these documents should be original and accompanied by an English translation. Depending on your situation and history, you may need to submit more documentation. Check with an official or on the Border Agency website.

    Workers

    • Work visas are possibly the most complicated type of visa issued by the U.K., and the requirements change depending on the type of work and the amount of time in the U.K. Malaysians who hold U.K. work permits and plan to work for under six months do not need to apply for a visa. Similarly, Malaysians traveling to the U.K. for temporary work of under three months in a creative or sporting category in Tier 5 of the Points Based System also do not need to apply for a visa. However, Malaysians going to work in the U.K. who do not fall into these categories must obtain a work visa and usually a work permit. The requirements vary and follow protocols laid out by the U.K.'s Point Based System for visas. Speak with an official at a consulate or embassy, or refer to the "Work Visa" section of the "How to Apply" page on the U.K. Border Agency's website.
