The Scourge of God - A Novel of the Change by SM Stirling
Here's a series for those who love fantasy with their post-apocalyptic science fiction.
"The Scourge of God: A Novel of the Change" by S.
M.
Stirling is the fifth book in the Change Saga.
It picks up after "The Sunrise Lands" and takes place a generation after "Dies the Fire.
" Stirling throws you right into the story line so new readers are better off starting at the beginning of this epic quest.
Twenty-two years after a mysterious change rendered technology nonfunctional and brought magic back into the world Rudi Mackenzie seeks the truth of what happened in Nantucket, where the change originated.
Beginning his travels in Oregon he continues his expedition across a hostile landscape to find his answers.
Along the way he and his group must fight the fanatical Church Universal and Triumphant, a group that believes this is God's punishment.
The Prophet and his followers will stop at nothing to keep Rudi from completing his quest.
The action, strong characters and vivid prose will no doubt captivate fans.
Stirling's multiple plot lines are well integrated.
His post-apocalyptic United States is believable and he deftly pits contrasting ideologies against each other.
Clans, Kingdoms, Wiccans, Cults, Indians, the different societies are convincingly portrayed, although the wealth of detail sometimes slows the stunning action sequences.
There's an escape scene with a stampeding buffalo herd that is exciting but may strain your credibility.
The quest to discover what caused the mysterious death of technology continues and once again the story ends with a cliff hanger as three of the party are captured.
Publisher: Roc Hardcover (September 2, 2008) ISBN: 978-0-451-46228-2 Pages: 464 Price: $25.
