Decorating Baby's Room

    • 1). Paint or wallpaper the walls. Use a neutral color to bring your theme to life through easily changeable accessories, a soft color for a calming effect or a bold color for a stimulating nursery. Mix in patterns by painting a mural, stripes or using patterned wallpaper. Use the lower half of the walls for a pattern, such as stripes or plaid, and the higher portion for a solid color to avoid overwhelming the room with a busy pattern.

    • 2). Put up a border or adhesive wall decals to instantly transform the room. Choose a pattern that complements the walls or use decals to create a mural effect without having to paint. Adhesive wall decals or borders can be easily removed when your baby gets a little bit older and has new preferences and needs.

    • 3). Choose furniture that can grow with your child, such as a convertible crib and chest with a removable changing table top. Dark finishes, such as chocolate or black, will pop against light-colored walls. Use white or light wood finishes to ground a bright room or accentuate a traditional style.

    • 4). Make the bed with solid sheets and a decorative duvet cover. The covers can depict cartoon images, shapes or patterns that fit into your theme or color scheme. Simple, solid bedding can be adapted to any theme.

    • 5). Hang artwork, framed posters, pictures or custom wall decor to pull the room together. Solid-color wall decor items, such as painted wooden letters, work best against patterned walls. If the walls are a solid color, or only have wide stripes, hang pictures or images that complement the room. For example, a contemporary room might include overlapping circle decals, while a jungle theme might include framed pictures of lions, giraffes, monkeys and hippos.

    • 6). Accessorize the nursery with a few themed items, such as a boot-shaped lamp for a western theme or flower-shaped rug for a garden theme. Include bins and baskets that complement the decor for storing toys, extra blankets or other items. Use theme-related fabric for the curtains, pillows or cushions on the changing table and rocking chair.
