How do I Search for Automobile License Plate Identification in Illinois?

    • 1). Know the law. The Drivers Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) was enacted in 1994 after actress Rebecca Shaeffer was murdered by an individual who received private information from the Department of Motor Vehicles in California. The DPPA requires that all private information including address, phone number, photo identification and Social Security number is available only for governmental authority figures such as the police.

Information available to the public includes title and registration searches as well as certified title and registration searches. This information will show interested parties whether or not a vehicle is possessed by someone. Any other information is not legally obtainable.

    • 2). Go to the Secretary of State website, CyberDriveIllinois.com. Click on the "Publications" tab. Once the the page pulls up, select the "Title and Registration" tab. Click the PDF with the form number "VSD 375" and title "Secretary of State Information Request Form".

    • 3). Print the document, and fill out the form. A check, money order or credit card are the only forms of payment available to look up registration and title certification information.

    • 4). Mail to the address listed on the form. Make sure the form has been properly signed and dated for quick processing. Because the Illinois Secretary of State's office receives a large amount of communication daily, it could take a couple of weeks to have your information processed.
