How to Feed Small Amounts of Supplements to Horses
- 1). Add a capful of corn oil to your horse's grain each time you feed. Corn oil helps make the coat shinier and more sleek, and many show horse owners use it as a supplement.
- 2). Talk to your veterinarian about which supplements are appropriate for your horse. There are literally hundreds of equine supplements on the market, and not all of them are appropriate for every horse. Consulting with your veterinarian about the specific needs of your horse is the best way to make sure your animal gets the nutrition and supplementation it needs.
- 3). Add the appropriate amount of supplement to your horse's feed. Each supplement has specific own dosing instructions, and the amount your horse needs depends on her weight. If the supplement is a powder, you might want to add the powder to some grain first, then add a capful of corn oil to dissolve it and make it more palatable.
- 4). Check your horse's feed tub after it is done eating to make sure the supplement was actually consumed. Some horses are very good at eating around the supplement and leaving the powder in the feed tub. If the horse is not eating all of the supplement, you will need to mix it more thoroughly into the grain.
