How to Collect on Bad Checks From Another State
- 1). Contact the check writer and request cash or a money order. Document your request in writing.
- 2). Contact the sheriff's department in your city. Explain that you have a bad check and would like to file a report. The officer will take your information and write a report or send an officer to your location to write the report. You will receive a report number.
- 3). Allow up to ten days to hear from the check writer. Continue to document each attempt to collect on the check. Make sure to send each request letter with a return receipt from the post office. This will prove your good faith effort.
- 4). Take the return receipt and other documentation to your local district attorney's office. Request the district attorney file a warrant for the check writer's arrest.
- 5). Wait for the individual to be extradited back to the location where the check was written. He will be taken in front of a judge and given the opportunity to pay the check amount as well a set bond amount. The check amount will be placed in the jail's account and you will receive notification to pick it up.
