How to Become a Developmental Therapist

    • 1). Get an education that will help prepare you to become a developmental therapist. You will need at least a two-year degree in therapy to qualify. While in training, you should take classes in special education (or minor in this field) as much as possible. Getting an education in both therapy and special education will give you well-rounded knowledge.

    • 2). Volunteer at a school, counseling organization, human-resources center or children's services business to gain hands-on experience in developmental therapy. It's best to do this by volunteering while in college to get the experience while learning about it in the classroom.

    • 3). Apply for an apprenticeship in which you volunteer or ask your school to refer you to an organization in which you could get an apprenticeship. Volunteering will help you gain the experience you need, but an apprenticeship can provide you with a mentor that can help you become a better developmental therapist in every way.

    • 4). Join the Association for Play Therapy. As a member of this organization, you will receive a subscription to Play Therapy Magazine, APT Flash, International Journal of Play, reduced fees for conferences and reduced fees for credentialing. These member benefits will help you stay on top of the industry as a developmental therapist.

    • 5). Join the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA) and become a certified developmental therapist. The NDTA has a wide variety of certifications that focus on a specific developmental disorder to help you get the most out of your training. Find other organizations through your community, work and education.
