How to Fix Loud Dual Exhausts

    • 1). Jack up the vehicle as high as you can and support the frame with jack stands. Don't position the jack stands under the rear axle of the vehicle, as this will hamper your ability to install the replacement exhaust system.

    • 2). Inspect the bolts that connect the exhaust tubes to the catalytic converter. If they are severely rusted, you will have to heat them with a propane torch to remove them. If they are relatively clean and not rusted, the process of removing the exhaust and installing the new one will be easier, which you can accomplish with a socket wrench.

    • 3). Remove the bolts holding the exhaust to the catalytic converter with a socket wrench. Between these two fittings, there is a metal ring. This ring is a seal, which you will have to use in the installation of the new exhaust system.

    • 4). Disconnect the tailpipe hangers from the rubber connectors at the rear of the car, and then try to wiggle the exhaust pipes out from under the vehicle without cutting them. If they won't come out, use the reciprocating saw to cut them into manageable sections that you can remove.

    • 5). Install the new exhaust system in place of the old, making certain to replace the metal ring between the flanges that mount the exhaust system to the catalytic converter. In most cases, the pipes for the exhaust system will be assembled in three pieces, from the catalytic converter to just in front of the muffler, the muffler itself, and then the rest of the tail pipe. If you install one of these kits, install the pipe from the catalytic converter to the muffler, securing the pipes with a compression bolt before installing the tail pipe.

    • 6). Install the tail pipe after you have installed the mufflers. You will have to route these over the rear axle of the vehicle exactly as you routed the stock exhaust. Wiggle them around until they fall into place.

    • 7). Install the tail pipe into the muffler pipe and secure it with a compression bolt, then hang the tail pipe's hanger post from the rubber muffler hanger at the rear of the car to complete the replacement exhaust installation. Make certain you have tightened all of the bolts for the compression fittings, and then lower the vehicle off of the jack stands.
