Seven Factors To Consider When Working With a POD "Publisher"

What's Most Important! Authors who consider self-publishing have many factors to consider, including publishing agreements, design details, getting an ISBN, getting library cataloging information and much more.
However among the many considerations is a myriad of very important issues that are head and shoulders above the rest.
1.
Authors need to retain all their intellectual property rights
- many authors pay a fee up front before their book is published.
If you choose this route then you need to be aware that you should only license your rights to a company to print your manuscript but only for a designated period of time not giving them away.
2.
Authors need to ensure they benefit financially from their books profits
- ensure that if you pay for your book to be printed that you receive the largest percentage of income form the sale of your products.
3.
Maintain the right to terminate your publishing contract,
preferably in 30 days, but no longer than 60 days - don't find yourself stuck in a contract that you cannot get out of.
If you are a savvy marketer you may come across an opportunity that is jct too good to pass up so beware.
4.
Receive commitments in writing from the publisher
- commitments regarding time, costs, income sharing, disagreement resolution, design etc.
Ensure they give you a timeline regarding the completion of the books design, the stories release date.
And even what efforts they are going to pursue to aid you in your marketing.
Also don't forget to get in detail and in writing what the conditions are to receive a full refund! 5.
Expect professional level services
- there are so many high quality designers, and professional level printers that it is completely unacceptable to be expected to settle fro a poorly designed cover or a cover that inst bound properly.
6.
Ensure you retain the ownership of all cover and interior design files if your contract is terminated
-while many publishers will not permit this you need to fight for these rights or move on and find a publisher that agrees to let you retain the rights.
Not just the PDF files either! 7.
Demand reasonable prices for books
- when seeking print on-demand publishing services, ensure that the publisher has no more than a 25% mark-up to cover their administrative costs.
Once you ensure you have retained your rights than your ready to implement your highly profitable marketing plan, utilizing the publishers resources to help you scale it into a highly profitable teaching, training, coaching or consulting program
