The 11th Edition of the Safaricom Lewa Marathon Around The Corner

The 11th edition of the Lewa Marathon is here again with us. Set to kick off on the 26th of June, this years' marathon has attracted big names such as Paul Tergat and Catherine Ndereba. The marathon was started with a sole aim of raising funds for the education, and well being of communities living around Lewa as well for conservation of several forestries.

The last edition raised a record Kshs. 37 mllion (about US$ 475,000.00). Todate, the marathon has managed to raise over US$2.25 million which has been invested in conservation and community development. Over 1,000 runners from over 20 countries participated. 700 runners took part in the half marathon while 15 braved the grueling course of the main 42km marathon. There will be a 5km fun race for children aged between 11 and 14 years

Participants come mainly from from the United States and United Kingdom. Runners from Australia, India, Europe and Canada also participate. Over 750 runners take part in the full and half marathon with an additional 100 children competing in the 5km fun run. The marathon is run on dirt roads, over two 21km loop for the half-marathon- through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

Over time, the Safaricom Marathon on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has gained reputation for being one of the ten toughest marathon events in the world. Run on a rough terrain and under harsh climatic conditions, it is an enticing experience which has continued to inspire distance runners and athletic fans alike. The grueling marathon is also unique in that it is run within a wildlife conservancy located at an average altitude of 5,500 feet above sea level.
