How to Replace a 1997 Camry Inside Door Handle
- 1). Roll the car window all the way down.
- 2). Remove the window handle if equipped with manual windows. The handle can be pried away from the door panel using your hands and a small screwdriver. On models with power door locks or windows, remove the switch panel by inserting the screwdriver under the rear edge of the panel and pry upward. Disconnect the electrical connector that attaches the switch to the wiring harness.
- 3). Remove the plastic trim piece from around the door handle by gently pulling it away from the door panel. No tools should be required to remove this trim piece.
- 4). Remove the small square plastic covering panel in the middle of the door handle with the aid of a small flat blade screwdriver. Remove the Phillips screw positioned behind the plastic panel you have removed.
- 5). Remove the two Phillips screws securing the door panel that are located in the door rest. Remove the four Phillips screws located at the bottom of the door panel. Using a small flat blade screwdriver, gently pry the three plastic rivets holding the door panel to the door frame.
- 6). Lift the door handle up until it clears the door frame and secure the panel in a safe location.
- 7). Remove the large Phillips screw securing the door handle to the door frame. Slide the door handle towards the front of the door. Once free of the door, detach the door lock bar and door latch bar from the handle. Remove the top bar first then rotate the handle slightly to remove the remaining bar.
- 8). Place the bottom bar into the new handle, rotate the handle slightly to allow the top bar to be inserted into the handle. Secure the handle to the door frame by sliding the handle towards the rear of the door. Insert the large Phillips screw and tighten with a Phillips screwdriver.
- 9). Reinstall the door panel and gently press with the palm of your hand on each plastic rivet to secure the door. Insert and tighten the six Phillips screws used to secure the door panel to the door frame.

Replace and tighten the small Phillips screw in the door handle. Press the small square plastic panel into the door handle to cover the Phillips screw. - 11
Attach the electrical connector to the door switch panel and snap it into the door panel. Replace the plastic trim around the door handle by gently pressing it into place.
