How to Remove the Starter in a 1997 Chevy Lumina

    • 1). Remove any connection on the negative post of the battery using an open-end wrench and follow the same procedure on the positive terminal. Use the jack to elevate the front end of the Lumina, then set it on the jack stands.

    • 2). Locate the starter on the driver's side of the engine, just below the oil filter. Remove the electrical connections on the starter using an open-end wrench.

    • 3). Remove the plastic cover for the torque converter using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to gain access to the bottom of the starter. Then hold the starter in one hand, and unbolt the starter from the engine block using a 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket. Lower the starter down and out away from the engine.
