How to Recharge Window Air Conditioners

    • 1). Remove the air conditioning unit from the window and place on a rag to protect the floor.

    • 2). Remove the screws that hold the back metal casing; once removed; slide the metal casing off. This will reveal the compressor, a metal cylinder with hoses coming off it.

    • 3). Examine the compressor and locate the larger of the two hoses. This hose will be used to recharge the unit.

    • 4). Attach the service valve, the larger of the two valve connectors within the refrigerant recharge kit, to the larger hose on the compressor.

    • 5). Attach the tap valve, which is the smaller of the two valve connectors within the refrigerant kit, into the smaller hose on the compressor.

    • 6). Turn the air conditioning unit to the highest setting to allow the flow of refrigerant to begin.

    • 7). Charge the unit until the can of refrigerant is empty. Disconnect the valves from the compressor hoses. Replace the metal protective casing and tighten the screws in place to ensure the casing is secure. Replace the air conditioner in the window and secure as necessary. Repeat this process whenever recharging is needed.
