Cambodia is still reeling from a bloodied and violent past.
Under the extremist regime of the Khmer Rouge who ruled between 1975 and 1979, a quarter of the Cambodian population died.
Those who survived did so under horrendous conditions, and although the country has progressed and healed significantly since those brutal days there is still much work to be done.
While the country now enjoys relative peace, poverty and hunger are rife and the past has definitely impeded Cambodia's development and prosperity as a nation.
As Cambodia moves away from its tumultuous past it is relying on the help and support of other nations and people to help move it in the right direction.
If you're interested in fighting Cambodian poverty and hunger issues, then here are a few ways to get involved.
- Donate money.
One of the best ways to help Cambodians is to make a donation to an aid organisation that is dedicated to helping Cambodians get back on their feet and be self-sufficient.
Many organisations run Christmas appeals, which is a good time to make a one off donation that will go towards food and harvesting supplies such as seeds and farm animals.
- Child Sponsorship.
Child sponsorship programs are a great way to dedicate money to the wellbeing of children in impoverished countries.
If you sponsor a child, the money that is deducted monthly goes towards that child's health, education, food and shelter but also benefits the community that that child lives in.
In this sense, child sponsorship is a holistic aid approach for Cambodians.
- Volunteer your time.
Some people shy away from merely donating money.
If you like a more hands on approach, then undertake volunteer work within Cambodia.
Whether this involves working with children in orphanages or helping build infrastructure for local communities, there is lots of work to be done.
You can even combine this volunteer work with a Cambodian holiday.
Aid organisation ActionAid Australia, for example, has organised a trip to Cambodia in March 2011 where participants will help build a wooden kindergarten in a Cambodian village, and enjoy a 6 day cycling tour around the countryside.
For a small country, Cambodia and its people have suffered a lot.
If you'd like to help Cambodians beat poverty and hunger then there are a number of options available.
Whether you donate money, sponsor a Cambodian child or volunteer your time and skills, no contribution is too small.
What will you do to help?
