OSHA Truck Safety

    Function

    • According to OSHA, thousands of workers in the United States sustain injuries related to powered industrial trucks and forklifts each year. OSHA says that most of these injuries are preventable with safe work practices, so it develops truck safety standards to protect workers.

    Features

    • OSHA regulations require all construction work vehicles, including trucks, to have functioning brakes that can slow and stop the vehicle. Vehicles should also have emergency brakes and parking brakes. According to federal law anyone under 18 cannot operate powered industrial trucks at work.

    Considerations

    • OSHA truck safety regulations require that employers make sure any workers using trucks have proper training to use them safely. Training should have both formal instructions, such as video training, and practical instructions, such as demonstrations on the actual truck. Employers who fail to provide adequate safety training for trucks can face penalties and citations from OSHA of varying severity, depending on how much danger employees were in.
