Import & Excise Duty
- According to the IRS, excise tax is "paid when purchases are made on a specific good, such as gasoline. Excise taxes are often included in the price of the product." This tax is assessed the same way for domestic or imported goods.
Per Buyusa.gov, excise taxes are assessed against the following products: oil derivatives, tobacco, beverages, alcoholic drinks, beer and wine and coffee. - Duty is paid when you re-enter your country of origin. The amount of the duty can depend on many factors, such as the nature of the item, what country you purchased it in and your intended use of the item.
- When re-entering the United States, you will have an exemption, which is dependent on where you are coming from and the value of the declared items. Once the exemptions are removed, the first $1,000 will be assessed at the flat duty fee rate. Any amount over $1,000 after the exemption will be charged the applicable duty rate.
