Projects for Woodworkers: Cheap Garden Sheds
You may not see yourself as a master carpenter, however, there are many projects even beginners can take on and make a respectable showing as a do-it-yourself-er. One of these is the simple garden shed. Relatively cheap garden sheds can be built over a weekend with the right tools and especially the right plans.
What makes anything difficult is not having clear cut instructions to take you through the process. I recently put one of the most complicated combination sport toys together for my son. Normally, I wouldnt take this on, but I got a look at the instructions and they were some of the best I had ever seen. Page by page, step by step, they told me exactly what to do. Granted, it took about two hours to complete, but get this: no parts left over and the thing works. My kid loves it!
So where to start? Building a garden shed can seem like a real challenge, but with some thought and planning it can be easier than you think. To my point about, start by finding a good blueprint or set of plans. Thats where you may want to spend a little money, unless you can find them online for free. Good plans with clear instructions will save you a lot of cash, not to mention time.
You can also get a garden shed kit depending upon your budget and there are lots out there. Most come with some sort of guide or instructions, however you wont know how good they are until you open the box. Kits do save a lot of time as you dont have to shop for all the wood and parts, and can save cutting and sawing time with pieces already cut to size for you.
Next you want to be sure you have the correct tools. Maybe you can borrow what youll need from a friend or neighbor. At the very least youll need a hammer, a saw, a level, carpenters pencil, metal ruler, and probably a skill saw with a clear space in your garage or driveway to set up a place to work safely.
Some other things youll need if youre not using a kit would be a good assortment of nails, especially those with a big head called box nails, drywall screws for fastening wood together securely, and a power drill and driver.
To help the project stay a cheap garden shed look for free wood and materials at yard sales, your local cabinet shop (ask if you can pick through their scrap dumpster), and even the dump. Youd be surprised what people throw away that can be used to create something really nice.
