How to Plan a Christening
- 1). The first step in planning a Christening is selecting the church, and more importantly, the church that will be part of your child's life. The best way to research the churches in your area is by attending mass in each one. Pick up a church bulletin to familiarize yourself with the church community and to learn more about the requirements involved for Christenings. Some churches require notice at least six months in advance of the Christening, while others require a full year. Make sure you're well acquainted with not only the church, but its requirements as well.
- 2). Once you've chosen your church, select the priest you'd like the accompany you through the Christening process and perform the service for your child's Christening. This may be a priest in the church community you've chosen, or it may be a priest from outside the community whom you've asked to perform the service. Ideally the priest is one with whom you feel a personal connection, and someone you'd like to be part of your child's life aids in his or her spiritual growth.
- 3). Godparents are chosen to stand up at a Christening and pledge to help guide the newly Christened child in the faith. Siblings of the child's parents are often chosen for this role, but consider who you think will be most capable of acting as a role model for your child and remaining a support in his or her spiritual life.
- 4). Babies usually wear a Christening gown that is white or off-white and has some sort of lace, embroidery or other subtle detail. They can range in price from $50 to more than $200. - 5). Decide whether you'd like to have a reception after the church service and, if so, if you'd like it to be small or large, at your home or out in a restaurant, and a brunch, lunch or dinner affair. Inquire at your favorite restaurants for prices and availability.
If you're having the reception at home, consider a caterer to provide the food, and possibly renting tables, chairs, and tents, depending on the size of the group you're planning to invite.
Go over your guest list and determine which of your family and friends you would like to be present.
