How to Effectively and Safely Clean Grout
As a professional cleaner, I am asked frequently about common household cleaning problems.
One of the most frequent questions I am asked is, "how do I clean my grout?" Discolored grout is a problem that many people have given up on because all the things they tried did not work or were unappealing due to fumes ( ex.
bleach).
I struggled with the same problem until my friend at our local janitorial supply store told me about oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) and it's ability to miraculously remove stains from decks, fabrics, and even grout.
Oxygen bleach is a non-toxic environmentally safe cleaner that has been gaining popularity in recent years.
After trying it for the first time, I was amazed at how effective it was at completely restoring my client's problem grout.
I have been using it ever since.
To use this product on your grout simply mix a scoop into a small bucket of warm water i.
e.
a clean, empty coffee can (the size of your scoop will vary according the strength of the product you are using) and mix thoroughly letting the powder dissolve.
Next spread this mixture across your tile.
Let the solution dwell for 30 minutes.
Next use a stiff bristled scrub brush and agitate the grout.
Then just let the solution air dry.
Letting the solution air dry will allow the chemical reaction to keep working for a few more hours.
This should brighten even the grungiest of grout.
This is so much easier than regular bleach which I used to use before.
I would have to wear a respirator and open up all the windows in the house.
Maintaining your tile and grout after you deep clean it like this will be very easy.
Just add a little oxygen bleach powder to your mop bucket each time you mop the floor.
Or if you have shower tiles, just spray some oxygen bleach mixed with water onto the tile with a spray bottle every once in awhile.
