How to Relearn the Basics of Riding a Skateboard
- 1). Position your feet so that one foot is over the back truck and other is just past the deck's halfway point. Your stance on the board should be comfortable, so if this stance on the board is not comfortable, adjust your forward foot until you find one that is. If you ride "regular" footed, your left foot will be towards the front of the board and your right foot will be towards the back. If you ride "goofy" footed, your right foot will be towards the front of the board and your left foot will be towards the back. Try both to see which one feels right for you.
- 2). Push off of the ground with the leg that is positioned towards the back of the board to propel the board forward. If you used a "mongo" push previously (pushing with the leg that is positioned towards the front of the board) you may continue to use this push; however, a regular push allows for better balance.
- 3). Return the foot you used to push the board to its position. While the board is moving, bend your knees slightly, keep your feet spread apart, turn your shoulders so that they are facing the direction you are traveling and keep your chin in line with your belly button. This body positioning will help you keep your balance while the board is moving.
- 4). Shift your weight to the left and to the right to navigate the skateboard to the left and to the right, respectively. Keep your body in the proper position (as discussed in Step 3) to maintain your balance.
- 5). Jump off of the skateboard or shift your weight back onto the tail of the skateboard to bring your ride to an end. Using the latter method of stopping causes your board to skid on its tail and can damage your board.
