Review of Gerry the Giraffe Learns Why It"s Good to Share

Cressida Elias is the author of the Safari Children's Books on Good Behavior series. One of the previous books in the series, Luc the Lion, was also reviewed by me. Another one of the books in the series is Gerry the Giraffe, which teaches another value of good behavior, sharing.

The story follows Gerry and his brother, George, who lived in an African savannah that was dry and dusty. The two brothers are unable to find any water, so they decide to split up to look for water, the plan being to share the water with the other brother if either one finds any. Gerry then finds some water, but decides to drink it all instead of calling out for his brother. George finds Gerry drinking all of the water and becomes very upset that Gerry didn't share any of the water he found with him. George became very weak and tired from not having enough water, which makes Gerry understand that it is important to share, especially when you've promised to. Gerry then tries to make it up to George by carrying him to find more water and even though it was hard to do, he feels much better about himself and much happier when he gets to share with his brother.

Once again, the author uses characters that children can identify with and a situation they will likely relate to. A lot of kids test boundaries by lying and taking more when they can as they figure out the best way to interact with others. The book presents a sort of complicated idea in such a way that a child can understand it €" not just that sharing is important to show that you care about someone, but sometimes sharing is important because not doing so can actually hurt someone or make them very sick. This one, a parent will want to read to a little one a few times to help the lesson sink in and a discussion about what Gerry did and what the young reader should do in similar circumstances will really help to reinforce the lesson of sharing in the book.

As in the previous book that I reviewed, this one has some challenge words sprinkled in that a parent will want to reinforce with their young one by giving them the opportunity to use it throughout the day after reading this book. So, if you have a young reader at home who is learning these important life lessons, get this book for them as material to guide the lesson.
