The History of the Toyota Previa
- In the United States, the Previa competed against Chrysler minivans (considered the first minivans) and a burgeoning minivan market. But the Previa's standard four-cylinder engine couldn't contend with Chrysler's six-cylinder engines. In 1998, Toyota's Sienna replaced the Previa in the United States. The Netherlands and the rest of North America continued to market the Previa.
- For 2000, Toyota redesigned the Estima/Previa but didn't export it in North America. The four-cylinder engine remained standard, and a diesel was an option in the European market. In addition, the Hong Kong and Japan markets offered a hybrid model.
- Toyota again restyled the Estima/Previa for 2006. This third-generation Previa is not marketed in Europe because the slightly smaller generation-two Previa remains a big seller. Nevertheless, Toyota exports the generation-three Estima and Previa elsewhere in the world.
