How to Be a Successful Telemarketer

    Be a Successful Telemarketer

    • 1). Learn about the product or service. Telemarketers must have a thorough understanding of their objective. If their job involves soliciting donations, they should be prepared to explain how the money is used and explain the benefits of making a donation. If a product or service is involved, telemarketers should know all of the selling points.

    • 2). Be courteous. People generally do not like to be disturbed in their homes by a telephone sales person. Telemarketers should be friendly and courteous, regardless of how the consumer responds. This behavior might increase the likelihood of a positive response. One way to develop a rapport is to ask the customer non-business questions about the weather or an upcoming holiday.

    • 3). Practice the pitch. Many companies provide their telemarketers with specific dialogue to use when contacting consumers. But when phone sales people read from designed speeches they might come across as sounding scripted or insincere. Telemarketers should play with the words to make them their own so that they can convey the information in a way that flows naturally. Practicing with friends or family can help.

    • 4). Try and try again. Telemarketers must persevere. Regular hang-ups, irritable consumers and countless voice mails are only a few of the obstacles that people in this job must face daily.

    • 5). Seek some sales training. People trained in sales understand the importance of building a relationship with a consumer. Additionally, sales people should be persuasive, goal-oriented and able to overcome obstacles. Many companies provide sales training for their telemarketers. Articles and books about selling can reinforce this training.
