How do I Tow With a GMC Motorhome?

    How Much Can You Tow?

    • 1). Weigh your current GMC motorhome with everything that you typically take on a trip inside. This includes driver and passengers. This can be done at most truck stops on their truck scales.

    • 2). Subtract the weight on the weight receipt from the truck stop from the GCWR (gross combined weight rating) for your motorhome. This number is how much extra weight capacity you have for towing according to the standard specifications.

    • 3). Find out what the gear ratio is on your differential. If it is stock, it is probably 3.07. GMC motorhomes with a replacement differential may have different gear ratios. It is possible to have a higher gear ratio installed so that you can tow more weight.

    • 4). Confirm that your GMC motorhome has a tow hitch rated over the amount of weight you wish to tow. If not, purchase and install one.

    Setting Up the Tow Vehicle

    • 1). Weigh your tow vehicle in the same manner as your GMC motorhome. Fill the tank before weighing. Add the approximate weight of the towing equipment. (Towing equipment dealers can give you this information.)

    • 2). Confirm that your tow vehicle isn't too heavy to tow with your motorhome. (GMC motorhome repair people may be able to assist with this.)

    • 3). Purchase and install the appropriate towing equipment on your towed vehicle.

    • 4). Install a braking system on the towed vehicle. This will assist your motorhome when slowing down and will prevent damage to the motorhome brakes, engine and transmission.

Connect the Towed Vehicle to the Motorhome

    • 1). Follow the manufacturer's instructions to hook up the towed vehicle to the tow hitch on the motorhome.

    • 2). Connect and set the braking system inside the towed vehicle.

    • 3). Test all lights and brake controls.

    • 4). Test-drive the joined vehicles to confirm that all systems are functioning correctly.
