Removing the remnants of wallpaper glue from your wall can prove to be a frustrating and time-consuming task. The glue that holds the paper to the wall is usually old and can crack, discolor and harden over time, making its removal very difficult. There are a variety of methods for removing wallpaper glue and chances are, you will have to try more than one before you are successful. - Fill a spray bottle with a solution of 4 tablespoons of liquid fabric softener and very hot water and saturate a small area of the wall with it. Allow the solution to soak in for a few minutes and then use a wide putty knife to scrape the glue from the wall. This method works best with hot water, so mix your solution in small batches to keep the correct temperature of water.
- Mix a solution of 1 tablespoon dish detergent in a bucket filled with very hot water. Use a sponge soaked in the solution to scrub the wallpaper glue. Continue scrubbing until all wallpaper glue is removed. Once the glue is gone, wash the walls thoroughly with clean water and then towel them dry before repainting.
- Plug in an iron and wait until it becomes hot. Take a sheet of tin foil, place it over the glue and run the iron over the top of it until the glue underneath becomes warm and loose. You should now be able to remove the glue from the wall using a rag to wipe the softened glue away.
- Take strips of duct tape and place it over the places where you need to remove glue from. Press the strip of tape down firmly and then pull it away from the wall. The glue should stick to the underside of the tape. This process will take a long time to cover a large area and is best used for small, stubborn sections of glue (reference 3).
- Mix 2 cups of white vinegar in a bucket filled with hot water. Use a sponge to cover your wall with the solution and allow it to soak in for a few minutes. The vinegar in the solution will dissolve the glue from the wall. Wash the wall again with a clean sponge and water to remove and remaining glue.
