DIY Alaska Tours
- 1). Choose a hotel in Anchorage, and plan to spend most of your time there as your base of operation. Book your hotel room by calling in advance. Be sure to set up a car rental at the same time. Choose an economy car that gets good gas mileage, because you'll be doing a lot of driving.
- 2). Start your tour in Anchorage. Plan to spend at least a few days there. Visit the Alaska Aviation Museum, which is dedicated to the state's aviation heritage and houses 21 vintage aircrafts. Your next stop should be the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. This museum will give you a lot of information and insight into Alaskan history. The Alaska Zoo, also located in Anchorage, is a great place for families to visit, and don't forget to stop by the H2Oasis, which features an indoor water park with rides, a wave pool, a water coaster and 150-foot body slide.
- 3). Visit Juneau after you're done touring Anchorage. Stop by the Juneau Trolley Car Company, which offers a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and stops at 13 points of interest. After your trolley ride, visit Mount Roberts Tramway, an aerial tramway that takes visitors from the docks to a height of 1,800 feet. At the top of the tramway, you'll find a restaurant, theater and nature theater, along with shops and trails for walking.
- 4). Visit Pioneer Park in Fairbanks. Families can spend the entire day in this 44-acre amusement park that celebrates Alaska history. If you have extra time, visit the Imaginarium (located in Anchorage), which is a hands-on learning center where visitors can learn about science by doing hands-on projects.
