Whether hauling a classic car to an auto show, a speed boat to the lake or a motorcycle to the mechanic, Michigan drivers should follow a few safety precautions that not only protect their property but also abide by the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code. - Drivers must limit the number of vehicles hauled on a trailer behind one vehicle to one. Michigan Motor Vehicle Code states the only exception to this rule is when one of the vehicles is equipped with a fifth wheel assembly, and one of the towed vehicles is designed for recreational living purposes. Length must not exceed 65 feet in this instance.
- The trailer hauling a vehicle must be attached to the towing vehicle with a coupling device that creates a linear alignment that does not deviate more than 3 inches to either side of the path of the towing vehicle.
- As of October 2003, Michigan Department of Motor Vehicles required all trailers to be registered with a permanent non-expiring trailer plate based on the trailer's weight.
- Michigan Motor Vehicle Code requires two reflectors, one on each side, and one on the rear of any trailer weighing 3,000 lbs. gross or less. For any trailer that is loaded in such a way to obscure a brake light on the towing vehicle the trailer must be equipped with one stop light as well.
