White-tailed deer, more commonly known as just the whitetail, are medium-sized deer native to the United States and most common east of the Rocky Mountains. Hunting for this type of deer is a popular sport, and each state varies in their laws regarding hunting licenses, the hunting seasons and the number of animals a hunter is allowed to kill. The state of Iowa is a lottery-draw state with applications done by phone in May for deer hunting. The state is also home to a number of outfitter companies that feature guided or semi-guided hunting trips.
