How to Set the Heat Anticipator on an Electric Furnace

- 1). Remove the thermostat cover by gently pulling it straight out from the wall.
- 2). Place a carpenter's level on top of the thermostat to ensure that it is plumb. If the thermostat is not level, it will not function properly.
- 3). Locate the heat anticipator by looking for a small metal lever that moves along a scale with numbered intervals. The opposite ends of the scale will be marked with the words "longer" and "shorter."
- 4). If the heating system turns on and off too frequently, move the lever one notch closer to the word "longer." If the heating system does not come on often enough, move the lever one notch toward the word "shorter."
- 5). Replace the thermostat cover and evaluate how the system performs during the next several hours. If the settings need to be adjusted further, repeat Steps 1 to 4.
