What Is the RN Licensure Examination?
- The National Council of State Boards of Nursing develops the NCLEX-RN to verify candidates have the required competence to perform adequately in an entry-level nursing position.
- Kaplan Nursing Test Prep states the NCLEX-RN relies on application rather than knowledge. Consequently, it assesses a candidate's ability to use sound critical thought processes when making judgments in a medical setting.
- The NCLEX-RN contains three sections: instructions, the actual examination of 75 to 265 questions and an optional survey about the examination experience. Individuals have six hours to finish and previous computer experience isn't necessary.
- The NCLEX-RN is a computer adaptive examination. The question following a correct answer is more difficult, the question following an incorrect answer is less difficult and the examination ends when the software determines the candidate has demonstrated adequate or inadequate competence.
- The testing organization Pearson VUE has administered the NCLEX-RN since 2002. The examination is offered at more than 200 locations in the United States and 18 locations elsewhere.
