What the TSA Enhanced Electronic Device Screening means for you:

On July 2, 2014, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson released a statement announcing ..."enhanced security measures in the coming days at certain overseas airports with direct flights to the United States." One of the most wide-spread enhanced security measures announced was the enhanced screening of electronic devices. This screening extended to laptop computers, cell phones, and tablet computers.

The announcement caused immediate confusion for those whom were immediately affected by the announcement. How would the new regulations come into play? More importantly, what would happen if a traveler could not power up their telephone or tablet? The good for most travelers is that, despite the announcement, traveling will be business as usual - with a few minor caveats.

Who does the Enhanced Electronic Device Security Screening affect?

As of the time of the announcement, the Enhanced Electronic Device Security Screening only affects those travelers flying directly from another country to the United States. Currently, the focus is on inbound flights from the United Kingdom to U.S. airports, but that could be subject to change at any given time. Be sure to check with your airline about enhanced security regulations before boarding your flight.

The test for device operation may come at one of several different points during your travels. British Airways alerts their customers that they may be asked to turn on any electrical or battery powered devices in front of security teams prior to boarding.

While this can include the security checkpoint, the reports of this happening are most often during the boarding process.

Currently, these restrictions do not apply for travelers flying within the United States and Canada. While it is always a good idea to make sure your devices are charged and running while traveling, you may not be denied boarding within the United States and Canada if your devices are not charged and able to be powered up.

What happens if my electronic device does not power up?

If your device does not power up on demand, you will not be allowed to take the device with you on the airplane. Your options include surrendering the item to security teams prior to boarding your airplane, or be denied boarding the scheduled flight. Some airlines will allow you to be booked on the next flight, under the assumption that you will be able to use the additional time to recharge your device and prove it's functionality before boarding. If you are concerned about your options, contact your airline or travel provider for their official policy on rebooking flights due to uncharged electronic devices.

At many airports around the world, charging stations are at a premium, making it vital to make sure your device stays charged up until the point that you are on the airplane. While you may be able to give it a quick jolt at the airport, finding a place to plug in may be difficult at best. If you are flying on a particularly long flight, or have multiple stops en route to the United States, make sure you have a plan to keep your electronic devices charged.

How can I make sure my electronic device stays powered?

With the new security regulations in play, keeping your devices charged prior to boarding is no longer a convenience - it will be a demand. Charging stations at airports are common, but can easily get overwhelmed in a hurry. Additionally, not having the right electricity adapters when you travel can make it much more difficult to find an appropriate charging station.

For those concerned with keeping electronic devices charged during international travel, consider purchasing a battery-operated USB charging device. Battery-powered USB charging devices work in a similar fashion to the USB port on your computer or wall charger: plug you phone or tablet into the charger via the USB device, and you'll be able to stay powered up. Before you decide on a charging device, make sure you read the reviews to make sure it's the right charger for you.

Anytime new security regulations are added, learning the processes can be confusing. But with proper planning and knowledge ahead of time, travelers can be better prepared for smooth flying, no matter where their adventures take them.
