How to Find a Publisher for New Authors
- 1). Write a good book. You won't find a willing publisher unless you have a well-written manuscript to show them. Have other writers and friends read it and then revise your book based on their comments. There are many online resources that can help you through your writing journey, such as AbsoluteWrite.com and The Verla Kay Boards, where you will find other new authors on a similar path.
- 2). Research the market. You will find resources, such as Agentquery.com and Querytracker.net very useful. Find out what kind of agents and editors are accepting your style of writing. Almost all large publishing houses require that manuscripts be submitted by agents. As a result, some writers look for an agent while others submit to smaller houses that accept submissions from the authors. Some authors decide to publish their books digitally while others prefer houses that publish in print.
- 3). Compile your submission package. This is usually made up of your manuscript and a short summary, called the query letter, of what the book is about. Every agent and editor has their own submission requirements. Read these and follow the directions as indicated. Usually, you will be asked to submit just your query letter initially. If it grabs an agent or editor's interest, then your manuscript pages will be requested. Upon reading your submission, the agent or publisher will get back to you on whether your book has been accepted or not.
