What Is the Difference Between Authorization & Authentication?

    Employment Authorization

    • An individual can obtain employment authorization through a variety of ways. If you are born in the U.S., you are legally authorized to work in the U.S. since birth. If you are a legal permanent resident in the U.S., you are automatically eligible to work in the U.S. If you are in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa, you may be allowed to legally work in the U.S. based on the specific requirements of your visa.

    Employment Eligibility

    • In order to provide proof that you are authorized to work in the U.S., you must produce documentation to the requesting person or agency (usually the new employer). The employer must accept any combination of the documents mentioned on the back of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, which has three lists of documents.

    List A

    • Items in List A are documents that prove identity as well as employment eligibility. To complete Form I-9, employers need only accept one document form this list.

    List B

    • Items in List B are documents that establish your identity. An employer must accept any document from List B along with any document from List C.

    List C

    • Items in List C are documents that establish your authorization to work in the U.S. Employers must accept a document from List C along with one form List B.
